I believe that people are more used to the opposite behavior: just select what they want to see ... but then I think I'll change fa-square to fa-check-square (it is not clear to me that they are selected the way it is today.) Can you guide me on how to make this change? I did not want to change the plugin file

Yes, by default all filters (categories, locations etc...) are selected initially.
