    How can I set the time zone for an event that is different from the calendar default time zone

    Create second calendar and place it there. You can display both calendars from the same shortcode.

    This calendar has list with all possible timezones as well. The the thing is the timezone picker is in the calendar settings rather than the event settings. I think it would be even more inefficient to select timezone every time event is created.

    That's how most calendars implement it like google calendar, outlook calendar we're not re-inventing the wheel.

    I guess I could customize the code to allow timezone for each individual event if that's critical for you.

    I've uploaded new version for the calendar (3.0.7) which will allow individual timezones for each event. 

    You can update from Dashboard -> Plugins section.
